ReplyDeletea theme i found in the story was,you could accomplish anything if you keep trying.in the story hatchet,first Brian couldn't start a fire.he kept trying and started using different things.finally he made red hot flame and as successful.so if you keep trying you can do anything.
I think the basic theme of this story is everyone has the ability to survive through odd and tough situations. What better way to show this? the author puts a 13 year old boy with limited experience and left him to survive on his own in the forest. I believe this is the theme because as readers we are learning how a teenager reacts to the obstacles he face and shows us how using our prior knowledge helps us. For example, Brain remembers T.V shows hes seen that relates to survival with limited resources. Also, he knows how to build his shelter, etc. I think the author used The Secret as a symbol. I say this because the Secret was the root to this problem and the cause of his family being completely destroyed. - MONA KALIKA 701

DeleteI think the theme is how simple knowledge from anywhere, from T.V shows to school. An Example is when he uses his shoelace to help him make a bow. P.S i'm Ahead in the book so im not sure if this is actually in chater 7 and 8 so sorry -Min Kim-

Sarah Asjad 701- I think the theme of this story is that everyone knows that how they survive from tough situations and I think the symbol in hatchet is divorce and the Secret because his whole family will not be completed beacuse of his parent's divorce.
ReplyDeleteI believe one of the themes from Hatchet is "expect the unexpected" because very unexpected things happen in the story, like Brian being in a plane crash and having to survive in the Canadian Woods. One symbol in Hatchet is the hatchet itself. It represents survival and protection. Another symbol is the secret. It represents the darker side of the story and why Brian is in this situation in the first place.

youll learn how to accomplish things if you keep on trying
Brian has to figure out things on his own and learn how to survive himself
he cant rely on other people to do everything for him
he has to expect the unexpected which means that their could be anything like a tornadoe, so he has to be prepared to survive that. Also, if Brian keeps on trying he'll finally come to a point where he has succeeded on his needs.
Symbolism:
the hatchet is the symbolism of life and surviving
the secret is the symbol of pain
the fire is the symbol of protection

I think that the theme of hatchet is to expect the unexpected and never give up . I agree with Simran, because Brian was put through alot of obstacles were it was really up to him to be clever and find a way out of it. Some peoplewould have given up and they would have starved to death or died of thirst but Brian kept looking for food until he found it he even ate the "gut cherries" when it was his only option.One of the symbols i think is the hatchet, its helped Brian survive a few times and it shows how determined Brian is to stay alive. Another possible theme is brains far better than beauty in life. i think so because brain keep trying and trying until he finally made a fire. I think that the theme of the story Hatchet,is about living in the wilderness.The Hatchet probably symbolizes something about him trying to survive in the wild.Its almost like Expect the Unexpected.Before,he saw his mom cheating on his dad and then,he later on gets stabbed by a porcupine.He also finds new ways to protect him like the fire he made or the berries he found.He never knows that will happen next.So he has to think ahead of time. -June Choy.705.

if Brian just gave up it would be all over but its not since he was determined like when he tried created a fire he just thought it out by
using his paper money. A symbol is the Knock down trees it symbolizes that
a storm hit since trees were twisted,fallen,and tilted.
One theme in HACHET is a lesson he had learned in Chapter 8 after he 'meets' the porqupine, "The most important rule of survival, which was feeling sorry for yourself didn't work". Don't matter how much you feel sorry for yourself, the truth is the truth, it already happened, you must face it.

ReplyDeleteI don't know where I'm suppose to put this response. Anyways, in my teams fight for survival in an unknown island, Our will to survive will need to be high. With duck tape, a hatchet, 5 flares, a compass and steel wood I hope we will be able to make shelter using duck tape and branches we find, conserve water with duck tape and the plastic wrap it came in and find a way to escape the island with our flares. For food we will hunt the jungles for fruits and berries or atleast anything edible. Lastly, we can use our hatchet to make other weapons for protection.
